The Japy family is a french industrial dynasty originally from Beaucourt in the Territoire de Belfort. They owned the second largest french company in terms of capital during the Second Empire. Its influential members left their mark on the french industrial landscape through numerous innovations, particularly in clockmaking, typewriters and pumps, as well as in labor organization and workers' social life in the 19th century.
This magnificent late 19th century french mantle clock garniture, work of the eminent Japy family, radiates the opulent decorative style of the Rococo Revival. A four glass clock standing on a raised base with an ornate ormolu bronze frame that features delicate leaf and floral motifs accented with vivid turquoise and crimson champlevé enamel. With its sinuous asymmetrical lines and lavish ornamentation, the set beautifully embodies the french penchant for sumptuous embellishment during the Emperor Napoleon III period. The matching urns feature similar champlevé enameling and bronze detailing in their bodies, lids and handles. Stamped on the back of the clock is the maker's mark and an inscription that indicates the country of origin. The original winding key is included to operate the clock mechanism.
A testament to the superlative artistry of french designers and artisans of the period, this ornate mantle clock garniture set transports one to the resplendent grandeur of fin de siècle France.
Their measures are:
Clock: 9.5 in x 6 in x 15 in
Urns: 5 in x 5 in x 13 in
