Chinoiserie, with its motifs inspired by the orient, emerged as a prevailing aesthetic across Europe in the early 20th century. Eager to capitalize on this trend, Meissen Porcelain, founded in 1708 as the first European hard-paste porcelain manufacturer, incorporated classic Chinoiserie motifs into its wares.
This Meissen porcelain dinner plate embodies the Chinoiserie style of the era, featuring a graceful hand-painted Ming dragon in green enameled glaze, showcasing the company's most enduring Chinese motif and symbolizing wisdom, change, and the male yang energy. The plate bears the iconic crossed swords logo imprint, introduced in 1720 by the manufacturer to protect Meissen pieces from counterfeiting. With its traditional Ming dragon motif, this chinoiserie Meissen plate encapsulates the european appetite for exotic oriental design in the early 1900s.
One end of the plate has been pierced with a wire loop to allow it to be hung on a wall or any other surface, as a decorative piece. less
