Contemporary latin american art in the 21st century continues to explore diverse themes, such as sociopolitical issues and spirituality, through innovative techniques and materials. This 2021 enameled ceramic sculpture epitomizes these trends. Created by argentine artist Vito Márquez as part of his 'Cenotafios' exhibition, the figurative work is molded from greystone ceramic and finished with enamel.
Drawing conceptual inspiration from the absence of those lost at sea, whose bodies were never recovered, Márquez imbues the work with a somber yet evocative mood. The sculptural quality and grey surface are intended to represent a cenotaph, a monument to lives tragically cut short. Exhibited in Chile and Argentina, this piece demonstrates Márquez's technical mastery and thoughtful approach to sculpture as a medium for exploring deeply human questions of loss, absence and nostalgia.
A pair of certificates of authenticity in physical and digital format issued by both the artist and our institution, Zeitgeist Gallery, are included with the purchase of the artwork.
