*Orrefors, founded in 1898 in the village of Småland, Sweden, is renowned for its exquisite crystal and art glass. Initially producing utilitarian glassware like bottles and windows, Orrefors shifted its focus under the leadership of Consul Johan Ekman in 1913. Collaborating with skilled designers like the Bergkvist brothers and borrowing from art glass giants like Daum and Gallé, Orrefors established a reputation for high-quality, hand-crafted pieces. Their collections encompass a range of products, including drinking glasses, vases, sculptures, and lighting, all characterized by timeless design, functionality, and meticulous craftsmanship. Today, Orrefors remains a prominent figure in Swedish design, continuously evolving while staying true to its rich heritage.

*Martti Rytkönen grew up in North Karelia, Finland. He studied at the University of Arts, Crafts & Design (Konstfack) in Stockholm with a focus on glass and ceramics. Rytkönen came to Orrefors as an Orrefors scholarship recipient in 1994, and then continued working for the brand. He is particularly known for his graphic effects and the designs he creates by cutting, blasting and engraving. His glass collections always reflect the true spirit of Orrefors – even when he experiments with shape and glassmaking techniques. He is fascinated by the possibilities of glass and likes to form the clear crystal into objects with a narrative. In his various designs, Martti shows us how the material can be soft and light; but at the same time, heavy, strong and hard. See less
