This is a group of 1930s Depression / Art Deco Era Rock Sharpe Crystal Water Glasses in the COUNTESS pattern. In this condition and quantity, they are quite rare. They are blown glass, in one of the most fanciful and classic patterns from the mysterious Rock Shark Crystal Company. Today the lore of Rock Sharpe exist in frothy mist. There is just not much good information on the actual history of the company, though we know its run was between 1930 and 1947. The glass from Rock Sharpe, on the other hand, is well known, quite popular and remains highly desirable and collected. This is probably a result of the awesome and fanciful features of their output, as are on display here. The pattern of the bowl is a fanciful rendering of boughs, trellises and thumbprints. The cuts cover almost the full expanse of the glass, top to bottom. The stem likewise is a stack of progressively larger octagonal wafers atop a flared octagonal, paneled section. Furthermore the foot bears a continuation of the branch pattern found on the bowl. In sum, classic, yet a virtual fantasy in cut and polished 1930s American elegant clear glass.
Many believe that Rock Sharpe was a foil for the Libby Glass Company, as many of the blanks seem to have originated at Libby. Nevertheless Rock Sharp is known for it radical experimentation in glass, and Libby had always played it close to the vest. In any case, the folly gave us these timeless classic, and for their time, experimental, water goblets.
A drawn rendering of the pattern is seen in the last photo of this listing.
These seven (7) water glasses stand 8" tall and have a mouth opening of 3-5/8". They are in excellent condition. Made, of course, in the U.S.A.
