Description: From the Historical Period of Staffordshire pottery, this is a transfer-printed light and dark blue plate depicting Christ Church College … more From the Historical Period of Staffordshire pottery, this is a transfer-printed light and dark blue plate depicting Christ Church College of Oxford University. In this scene, copied from an etching or painting, shows students in academic dress standing in the foreground, with the 17th century Tom Tower of the entry gate, designed by Christopher Wren, in the right background. Also shown is the 16th century Cathedral Church of Christ, which was established by King Henry VIII. On the reverse, the signature cartouche contains the works "Opaque China, Christ Church Oxford, J&W Ridgway".

The plate has Neoclassical, Grecian-inspired cartouches containing goats and Grecian figures on the rim, along with florals and botanicals. This plate is from the Oxford and Cambridge College Series by John & William Ridgway. It was made at their Cauldon Place Works, Shelton, Staffordshire. This firm rivaled Minton and Copeland in quality and success. less
