19th Century English J. Clementson Ironstone Blue Transfer-Ware "Siam" Pattern Octagonal 8.75” Serving Bowl. The design features a cityscape scene with castle ruins and figures.
Joseph Clementson was born in 1794 and started working at potteries at the age of seventeen. He established the Phoenix Works in 1832, expanded in 1845 and purchased the Bell Works in 1856 before retiring from business in 1867.
This wonderful ironstone blue transfer-ware bowl is the "Siam" pattern, circa 1850. It measures 8.75” across and is stamped with the Phoenix Bird mark, "Ironstone - Siam - J. Clementson"; impressed "Clementson - Shelton" and registry mark for 1850. There are several hairline cracks on the bowl and a couple of chips on the rim of the base. There is some crazing which is normal for the age and use of the bowl.
This is a great piece of early blue transfer-ware! It would enhance a Victorian, English Country, or Traditional decor!
The Bowl measures 8 3/4” Wide and 3 1/4” High. It weighs 1 pound 15.6 ounces or 31.64 ounces or 897 grams. less
