This Really is an Great Looking & Quite Rare Antique American Stoneware Food & Liquids Storage Jar - Crock. Circa Early 19th Century. It is Completely Hand Made and Rendered in the Early American "Ovoid" Shape. It has a Classic Greige Color Salt Glaze Exterior. It is Hand Decorated with Dark Navy Blue Features at the Handles - "Ears" and at the Front with the Number 2 Denoting its 2 Gallon Storage Capacity. It is Embossed - Signed by the Historically Important and Very Well Documented Up State Lyons New York Maker "N. CLARK & CO. LYONS" ( Nathan Clark ). NOTE that This Mark was Only Used at the Kiln and Factory Location Between 1822 and 1835 at the Newly Opened Erie Canal. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use. Condition Details - It is in Strong & Sound, No Cracks, Perfectly Usable and Displays Nicely. It has Some Normal Use Related Chips on the Handles and 2 Chips at the Top Rim Outer Perimeter. It Also Has a Few Very Fine - Faint Surface Only Glaze Hairlines ( Not Cracks ). It Also has a Few Kiln Glaze Surface Imperfections - Rust Color Spots Here and There All of Which Would Have Occurred in the Making - Kiln Firing Process. These Types of Utilitarian Stoneware Items Were Fired in Large Kilns in Batches with Many Other Pieces at the Same Time and These Types of Kiln Acquired Blemishes are Quite Common.
It Measures Overall Approx. 11 inches Tall x 10 1/4 inches Wide - Long.
