This beautiful antique European cross stitch alphabet sampler dated 1852 is stitched in shades of blue, brown, and red silk on what appears to be hand-woven linen. Some of the symbols, such as the crowns, look Scandinavian. No letter J is included in the alphabets. Italian uses the letter J only in proper nouns; however, Italian does not use an umlaut o so likely not Italian.
Custom conservation frame in 7/8"' wide silvery gray, carved wooden frame. Eyelets and wire for hanging. Sampler 6" high x 11 1/2" wide. Frame 10 7/8" high x 16 1/8" wide. No loss of stitches; normal age-related fading of thread and discoloration of ground. less
