Offered is a stunning 19th century copper mold made by the English Coppersmith company Benham & Froud. This fantastic mold was made c1870 in London.
This mold is marked on one side with an impressed number "229" which would have been the stock number. Above the stock number is Benham's famous orb and cross mark, clearly stamped. Benham & Froud was the premier English coppersmith company in Victorian London and was established in 1785. They were said to have made the "Rolls Royce of jelly moulds". In 1821 they made the replacement orb and cross for St. Paul's cathedral and then adopted an orb and cross as their signature mark. `
The three tiered elegant design of this mold is what makes it stand out. This mold is made from a very heavy gauge of copper. The tinning to the interior is worn and would need to be re-tinned if it was to be used. This mold would have been used to make an aspic or gelatin side dish, or possibly a small cake. It is in excellent antique condition with very minor, if any issues that I can see - which is remarkable for a piece that is 150 years old. There is a soldered hanging ring attached.
