This massive oil on canvas painting depicts a rocky seascape (which appears to be a California beach) at sunset. It was painted by Warren Eliphalet Rollins (1861-1962). Rollins was raised born in Nevada, raised in California and spent quite a bit of time in Arizona and New Mexico. He was influential in establishing the Taos and Santa Fe art colonies. The painting is signed "W. E. Rollins" at lower right and is undated. Based on the age of the canvas, I would date it to approximately the 1940's. A true gem that would find a treasured place in any serious art collection. It is framed in an elaborate, lovely carved wooden frame that is likely worth several hundred dollars in its own right. Rollins has numerous auction records, including some exceeding $15,000.

Condition: The painting is in excellent condition for age. There appear to be two minor repairs, both of which are difficult to see without knowing about them. One is for a small tear and one appears to be shoring up a tiny spot of fraying (see third-to-last and second-to-last photos, respectively). Frame is in excellent condition.
