I'm not absolutely certain, but I think this lovely little piece is an open salt cellar, with 800 silver and a very nice smooth glass bowl insert. The sides look like a fence, with open areas, sitting on a wider base of embossed and beaded branches or flowers. The piece sits on 4 tiny round ball feet.
This charming small serving piece measures 4 inches wide across the outer edge of the silver base (3.75 inches across the ends of the glass boat), 2 inches wide, and 1-5/8 inches high at the top of the glass rim (or 1 inch at the top of the silver rim). It is in very good condition. The silver has just a bit of tarnish, and the glass inset is very clean with no chips or cracks. The four tiny ball feet are a little off, so the piece has a slight wobble when sitting on a flat surface.
The top edge of the silver rim has several marks. I assume one is a maker's mark (which I can't quite make out), with an 800 and what I think is a crescent and crown. Google (online silver sites) tells me that an 1884 German law made 800 fineness the minimum accepted national standard for products claiming to be silver. They were hallmarked with a crown and crescent moon, a maker's mark, and a decimal fineness mark. less
