When … more From several sources, the Kotatsu is an antique design which was placed over a small hearth in the floor. When covered with a quilt, family members would sit with their legs under the quilt. This is still done today but with electric heaters under the Kotatsu.

The kotatsu is all wood without any nails. Each of the slat of wood is threaded through each crosspiece. The lattice work is not a simple overlay. You will be able to see this with the current photos.

Although modern Kotatsu are still used for sitting and heat, they can be used as a “coffee” table, an upright stand, on a wall, for displaying various items or removing the legs and hanging on a wall. All of these usages have been documented in a book on Japanese design elements and can be obtained from the seller. Kotatsu pictured is a square of 32 ¼ inches and 12 ½ high.
