This beautiful vintage hand painted japanned screen depicts scenes of nature, architecture and figures in yellow, red, green and gold … more This beautiful vintage hand painted japanned screen depicts scenes of nature, architecture and figures in yellow, red, green and gold painted against an aged black lacquer ground with wonderful craquelure texture. The reverse side of the screen is plain black lacquer and has hanging hooks added to assist in hanging it on a wall. The core of the screen is wood wrapped in fabric and covered in gesso, painted with a varnished finish. The craquelure texture gives this the appearance of a 19th century japanned leather screen. I believe this to be a 1940s-50s example. Each panel is 16" wide. less

The original hinges are designed in such a way that the hinge pins are easily removable and consequently, all but one of the original pins are missing and have been replaced as seen in the detail photo of one of the hinges. Some of the screws that secure the hinges have been replaced over time. The wall hanging hardware on the reverse side is not original to the screen and has been added at some point. less
