This low bench was once used as a foot stool for a bed in dynastic China. It would have been … more This low bench was once used as a foot stool for a bed in dynastic China. It would have been used against a canopy bed or a kang bed. Bamboo slats were used as the material for the seat or the top of the bench. The top has a mitered frame and the double molding that framed the top, the apron, and the legs give a stylistic look which is evocative of Ming Dynasty furniture. The bench has been restored, the old finish can still be seen on the underside. There is a separation on one the decorative elements which are later additions. The last photo shows the white lines where the wood separated, but can be touched up to march the color so it will not show. less
