rich symbolism woven in pastel hues create uniquely feminine tribal vibe in this vintage Persian Azerbaijan runner. Ram's horns, hands on hips (elibelinde), fertility (bereket), running arrows, diamonds, eight-pointed stars, animals, and hooked motifs create an all-over geometric pattern that fills the abrashed field. The classic elibelinde motif, also known as the “hands on hips” or goddess motif, is thought to represent motherhood and fertility while ram’s horns represent masculinity and power. The fertility bereket motifs that appear combine the symbols of both man and woman, often referred to as ram’s horn and hands-on-hips motifs, into one design with a diamond in the centre. Traditionally, the s-shape symbols represents hooks, diamonds represent eyes, and eight-point stars are for protection. All of these symbols are seen to protect against evil. Meanwhile an elegant arrangement of simple outlined blossoms and angular tendrils form a dynamic primary border. Long necked animals appear at intervals affronted and with heads pointing towards each other. Rows of diamonds and triangles are found in inner and outer guard borders and serve to further unify the composition. This vintage azerbaijan carpet runner displays a charming visual appeal and intimate patina on a time-softened color palette with significant abrash and color gradations.
Rendered in variegated shades of brown, taupe, red, pink, rose, navy blue, tan, sand, ecru, baby blue, gray, and beige with other accent colors.
