Description: This is a primitive hand-forged cow bell dating from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. I purchased it at … more This is a primitive hand-forged cow bell dating from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. I purchased it at an antiques auction in Hamilton NY in the early 1970's, and it came from an old dairy farm in that region. It is hand-forged brass, with some dimples showing from hammer strikes during the making. The side seams are folded and hand riveted.

What makes it very unusual is the hand carved wood clapper, which gives this bell a distinctive, deep and resonate tone. The vast majority of cow bells had metal clappers, which produce a higher pitched metallic sound. The wood clapper is 5-1/2 inches long with a carved detail on the end.

The bell measures 6-1/2" from base to top of the bail; it is 3-1/2 inches from side to side and 3-1/8 inches deep across the base.

I've moved to a much smaller house and have to part with many of my furnishings, paintings and collectibles, so my cow bell must go. I've other items listed, so please visit my Chairish store. less
