"White Ginger"
Shirley Russell 1936
"White Ginger" is just one of several flower prints Shirley Russell created in conjunction with the Japanese publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō. The white ginger plant grows in profusion in Honolulu, Hawaii. This is where Russell lived for 60 years, practicing her art and teaching.
According to Japanese printmaking tradition, a separate carver and printer executed this woodcut after Russell’s design. The artwork evokes a Hawaii of the past- a bit foreign and exotic. This piece is a botanical record of Mid 20th Century Hawaiian flora. Signed and numbered.
