Ernst Wilhelm Nay studied under Karl Hofer at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts from 1925-28. His initial orientation took place in his engagement with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Henri Matisse, but also with Caspar David Friedrich and Nicolas Poussin; his still lifes, portraits and landscapes received great recognition. In 1931, Nay received a nine-month scholarship to the Villa Massimo in Rome, where he created his surrealist-abstract paintings. Through the mediation of Lübeck museum director C.G. Heise, Nay received a working scholarship financed by Edvard Munch, which enabled him to spend time in Norway and the Lofoten Islands in 1937. The "Fishermen and Lofoten Paintings" he created there marked the first high point of his work. In the same year, two of his works were shown in the "Degenerate Art" exhibition and Nay was banned from exhibiting them. Called up for military service in 1940, Nay was sent to France as an infantryman, where a French sculptor made his studio available to him. The artistic processing of the war and post-war period took place from 1945-48 in the "Hekatebildern", in which motifs from myths and legends were used. This piece has an attribution mark,
