It … Read more Karatsu ware is a style of Japanese pottery made in the city of Karatsu in Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan. It is known for its simple and naturalistic style, utilising local clay and displaying earthy, subdued colours. The iron-glazed rim design, known as "Kawakujira" (whale skin), is named for its resemblance to a whale's outer and under skin layers. Initially meant to strengthen the rim, tea masters linked it to Karatsu port's whaling culture. See less
