Rare pair fiberglass ''Pod'' chairs by Stewart MacDougall. Produced by Stewart Marine, circa 1980. Newly painted in matte white. Zippered cushions newly reupholstered in vinyl. Original webbing and strapping to seats. Strapping stiff but serviceable (see photos).
Alexander Stewart Orton MacDougall (American, 1927-2016) was a mutifaceted designer of modern furniture, sculpture, and yachts. He grew up in Pasadena, California. During childhood, his father was killed in an accident while hunting wild boar on Santa Cruz Island (he was involved in negotiations to purchase the island at the time). Mr. MacDougall attended the Orton School of Classical Learning where his mother was head mistress. He later attended Chouinard School in Los Angeles to pursue art and design. Subsequent to completing his education, he was employed by Rudolph Baumfeld and later with Le Courbusier. As a member of the California Modernist Movement, he would go on to design furniture for Drexel in partnership with Kipp Stewart. Later in his career, he founded Stewart Marine which manufactured racing yachts (and pairs of ''Pod'' chairs). less
