Origins and history:
Despite mass production, Austin's reproductions became collectible items, with retired pieces having a higher value. In 2009, the company retired its entire line, leading to a thriving market of dealers and collectors seeking to complete their collections before these items became unavailable.
Austin Productions manufactured reproductions of classical Egyptian, Greek, and Roman sculptures and African, Asian, and contemporary pieces. The company was founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 1952. Later, it expanded into producing and importing home furnishings, including decorative sculptures, wall decorations, mirrors, and clocks. Austin Productions gained its reputation for high-quality reproductions made of hand-cast Durastone, bronze, and hand-painted marble. The company also produced more modern subjects such as popular comic strip characters, modern sports, and movies.
Art Deco, an abbreviation of the French term Arts Décoratifs meaning "decorative arts," is a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design that originated in Paris during the 1910s, just before the outbreak of World War I. The Art Deco style gained immense popularity in the United States and Europe during the 1920s and early 1930s. less
