Origins and history:
The Nippon era began in 1891 after the McKinley Tariff Act was passed. This act mandated that all porcelain be labeled with its country of origin. As a result, Japanese porcelain was labeled "Nippon," which means "Japan" in Japanese. The porcelain was made specifically for export to the West, with designs and patterns that appealed to American tastes. During this time, Japan had a thriving porcelain industry that used European and American techniques. However, in 1921, the United States government changed its policy and required all Japanese imports to be labeled with "Japan" instead of "Nippon," which marked the end of the Nippon era. less
