Artist Biography Biography
Horatio Nelson Poole (1884 - 1949) was active/lived in California, Hawaii, New Jersey. He was known as an accomplished painter and muralist. He worked on many commissioned projects and was also a teacher for many years. Poole was born in Haddonfield, New Jersey in 1884. He and his family relocated to Pennsylvania when he was ten years old. Poole lived in Philadelphia and studied at the local School of Industrial Design. He went on to attend classes at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art for six years as a pupil of Thomas Anshutz. In 1914, he moved to Hawaii where he was able to support himself working as a newspaper illustrator,"Pacific Commercial Advertiser". For the opening night exhibit of the 1917 opening night exhibition of the Hawaiian Society of Artists, he both exhited his etchings and did the promotional sketch for the newspaper.In 1921 he left Hawaii to relocate in San Francisco, California, where he worked as a teacher at the California School of Fine Arts and the University of California, Berkeley. Poole served as the president of the California Society of Etchers for three years and remained involved in the club. During the 1930s he did work for the Public Works Administration painting murals, including one he did for the Roosevelt Junior High School in San Francisco. Throughout his career he exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Art, (1935), and the Galerie Beaux Arts, San Francisco (1929). He died in San Francisco, California in 1949. less
