Louis Toffoli was a French painter and lithographer born in Trieste (Austrian Littoral) on October 16, 1907, to an Italian father and a Slovenian mother. He died in Créteil on February 18, 1999.
A witness to his times, his artistic expression is characterized by observation of the human gesture (as in "Le Maréchal-ferrant" in 1972), picturesque scenes (as in "Les Dentellières" in 1979) or landscapes shaped by man (as in "Terre des hommes" in 1967). In 1979, a highly successful Toffoli exhibition was held in his native Charenton. The bond between the artist and his town has remained strong. Louis Toffoli donated two frescoes to the municipal theater in June 1984, and created two mosaics: "Les Tonneliers" on the Quai des Carrières, and "Les enfants qui jouent à l'école des Quatre-Vents". The municipality is proud to own several of his works, enriching the local heritage. On March 11, 1995, the Musée Toffoli was inaugurated on the Place des Marseillais in Charenton, near Paris.
He exhibited his paintings inspired by the world of work, one of the major themes in his work, at the Salon des Indépendants. In 1947, Luigi Toffoli obtained French nationality and became Louis Toffoli.
Toffoli's work is striking for visitors, with transparent light streaming through all forms, seemingly emanating from the paintings. An impression of purity emanates from his paintings, creating a deep intimacy with the figures. Louis Toffoli was apparently searching for an unusual inner truth, and the vibrant colors and lights of his paintings make the patterns on the canvas sing and delight the viewer. Louis Toffoli used just one technique for his paintings: wet chalk. The subjects are often found on waxed canvases, where the light shines through differently depending on the support. Louis Toffoli also devoted a period of his work to lithography, exploring the work of light, and created a work dedicated to the work of the lithographer entitled "La Presse à bras".
