A rare find with an impeccable provenance and one of the most beautiful, luscious patinas I have seen in many a year. This is a fine early 19th century Italian Neoclassical (Empire) walnut and ebonized center table; the circular top over a thick frieze with two opposing drawers over a tripartite stem supported by ebonized swan figures raised on a tripartite plinth base with original brass castors. Dated Circa 1815.
40.5 inches diameter x 31.5 inches high.
Provenance: Foster Gwin Gallery, San Francisco. Foster Gwin Gallery has been running since 1984 and has brought in A-list clients such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Reilly, David Rockefeller, Diana Knowles, Dodie Rosekrans, Dolph Andrews, Ichiro Suzuki, Gregg Popovich and Joe Lacob.
This piece comes directly from a prominent San Francisco estate that had acquired it from Foster Gwin gallery.
Accompanying the table is the original description on Foster Gwin stationery. Apart from the description and original price of $28,000 (which would have been many years ago) it includes a reference to a book published in 2000: Mobile Impero, Il Neoclassicismo Tra Emilia E Lombardia by Elisabetta Barbolini Ferrari. Although this table is not pictured in the book it does show many fine examples of similarly styled furniture of the period.
Condition: This table is more than 200 years old and it has some wear and restoration commensurate with its age. Some time in the past there has been some infill professionally applied to the table top where there were some minor losses and cracks, and which blend well with the original patina. One pair of feet on one of the swans has been repaired. There are some areas on parts of the ebonized swans that have been rubbed through to expose the natural wood. There is a slight indentation on the table top where the carcase of the table top has settled, perhaps.
Please see all photos. I can only include 10 photos with this Chairish listing. I want you to live happily with this table and will be very glad to supply you with more photos showing any aspect of the table if you are considering its acquisition.
