The hand dovetailed drawers feature figured mahogany … more Offered for your consideration, this gem of a late Georgian style beside chest. The hand dovetailed drawers feature figured mahogany and are inlaid with satinwood. The top two drawers have lock boxes a that appear to be original (no key). A solid mahogany top, features inlays and cross banding on the three exposed edges. The case sits on a bracket base, fashioned from cherrywood that is stained to resemble mahogany. The newer vintage brass hardware complement this chest’s neoclassical elegance. The scaled down proportions make this antique so appealing in its versatility for today’s home.

This piece is likely American (New England) in origin based on the substrate wood used (white pine, hemlock?). An English maker should not be ruled out based on the form (commode).

This piece is well maintained and has undergone some restoration. Please read condition statement.

Condition Notes: Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The drawers appear to have been reworked (possibly between the late 1800’s and … moreVery good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The drawers appear to have been reworked (possibly between the late 1800’s and early 1900’s). Wood has been spliced to the bottom of the sides and the backs have been replaced in their entirety as these newer backs exhibit radial saw marks on the exterior. The two bore bale pulls were likely added within this time range and the original single boreholes filled. The lockboxes are untested as there is no key and are fastened by hand cut screws that would be consistent with those used in the late 18th or early 19th century. It is appreciated that the restorer was skilled and sensitive enough to used correct wood stock and recycle original materials (hand-cut nails, etc) but not dubious in an attempt to pass of their work as original. Repairs also made to back of legs as well as more recent work including new blocking in the base and resetting on top with modern screws. This piece also exhibits typical hallmarks of antique furniture such as scratches, cracking and cross-grain shrinkage , and wood loss. The case joinery is still tight and drawers function well.
