A meticulously sculpted drop edge candle vase inspired by the Viennese Secessionist movement of Art Nouveau that flourished between 1892 and 1906 in Austria. Its organic style and sculpted floral design is one of the most complex creations to come from the EDDA series produced by Amphora Pottery, otherwise known as Riessner Stellmacher and Kessel (RStK).
The vase body is structured from a proprietary porcelain with a soft yellow shade and matte finish developed by Eduard Stellmacher that he described as "ivory porcelain". The new substance allowed artists to create complex modeling and finely detailed shapes. These attributes are strongly exhibited in this piece. No other pottery producer could command these results.
This earthenware vase with matte yellow-ivory finish is made to evoke ice and winter. The 1900 EDDA series from Amphora was named after two medieval Icelandic poems of Norse mythology, and its pieces were "highly regarded for the original concepts of design and form" and belong "to the zenith of Art Nouveau ceramics." (Scott, "Ceramics from the House of Amphora 1890-1915".
Stands 9 1/2" on height and approximately 3 1/2" in width.
A triangular EDDA lozenge is applied to the base, though the EDDA imprint is quite faint. The base is also marked with "Amphora" within an ova;l and "Austria" within and oval. In addition, there is an impressed 3-pointed crown found typically on RStK pieces and an impressed "8927" and a handwritten "0424" and a stamped "R" possibly for Riessner
NOTE:
RSt&K’s output was renowned for its remarkable combination of stylistic diversity with a high standard of quality. They exhibited at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair and received numerous awards from 1892 through 1904. The company received the highest award at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago and in the same year received the Gold Medal at the San Francisco Exhibition. less
