This tall vase represents the epogee of Mid Century Modern Swedish glass-making and design. Made by Strombergshyttan, while the company was under the direction of the noted Edvard and Gerda Strömberg family including their daughter Asta, this tall vase stands 10.75 inches. It features the distinctive powder blow hue for which Strombergshyttan achieved early fame. The color just seems to emerge from some unidentified and mysterious place with the glass, intensifying to a more solid blue on the top of the rounded thick walls of 0.75" in width. This exemplar has an engraved illustration on its front which evokes the heart of Swedish Mid Century Modernism. The image is of a female figure, who seems to stand in a field harvesting a fresh bouquet. The width of the vase is 6.5" and the depth is 4".
It is both hand blown and hand engraved. The vase is composed of 8.5 pounds of leaded crystal, in fine condition, with shockingly few signs revealing its substantial age. On the base of the vase one find the etched identification of Strombergshyttan, along with two production codes (B 1040 and C 1105) and the names of two Artists who contributed to the creation of the piece.
Founded in 1867, it was originally named ‘Lindefors’ and in 1933 became known as Strömbergshyttan, once the husband-and-wife duo, Edvard and Gerda Strömberg, took over operations and was continued by their daughter Asta. Strömbergshyttan glassworks became synonymous with mid-century Swedish glass. The company remained in the Strömberg family until it was bought by Orrefors in 1976 and thereafter passed into history.
