Salins began producing pottery in 1857 at Salins-les-Bains, Lorraine, near the Swiss border. The location of an old Capuchin convent and its surrounding grounds was turned into a faience ceramic studio. Salins won a silver medal at the Paris Universal Exposition in 1889 and a gold medal at the Paris International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1912.
The majority of Salins majolica manufacture included artichoke and asparagus plates, platters, and cradles. The pieces were generally well sculpted and glazed. When marked, the name "SALINS" appears on a white background.
This Asparagus and Artichoke Cradle is a beautifully preserved piece.
