Historically over a hundred kilns produced Karatsu-ware in this period, … more A small Chōsen-Karatsu sake bottle from the early Edo period. Historically over a hundred kilns produced Karatsu-ware in this period, but only a handful were successful in creating the signature black and white Chōsen-Karatsu. The most prized examples were those that displayed a characteristic kiln-transformation wherein the glazes flow a bright blue colour. Chōsen-Karatsu was primarily produced in the region around Kishidake castle 岸岳城 and down to the southwest towards the city of Imari 伊万里市. This bottle is likely to have originated from the Fujinokawachi kiln 藤の川内窯 (sometimes pronounced ‘Fujinkawachi’).

Looking closely at the facture of this piece, it is clear that at some point during the firing the bottle fell over in the kiln. This is evident from the sandy texture fused to the neck of the bottle on one side, and the sections of blue glaze flowing horizontally. Historical pieces with such vibrancy and texture are rare, making this a wonderful item for collectors. less
