It takes many years of practice to hone the skills necessary to properly glaze wares in the Chōsen-Karatsu style. Historical examples with the desired glaze affect were often larger objects. Indeed, it can be said that when glazing larger objects, the chances of failure are lower.
This small handled flower-vase is no taller than the average tea caddy. Yet the finesse in which the white straw-ash glaze has been applied over the iron-brown is well controlled, resulting in the signature reduction-fired kiln transformation of blue wisps.
