The work centers on Venetian building facades with moored gondolas and shimmering reflections on the water in the foreground. Figura, an Austrian painter and printmaker, was best known for his intricate aquatint etchings of European landscapes and cityscapes. The artist’s etchings often have a noticeable shift between the contrast in foreground and background, thereby lending a realistic sense of depth the scenes, as evident in this work. The work is mounted in a metal silver gilt molding.
