The technique involved in creating Chōsen Karatsu favours vertical surfaces as on vases, cups, etc. in order to create a striking flowing glaze pattern. However, in rare circumstances, and with skill, horizontal shapes like plates are also subject to a similar effect.
This small dish has the signature Chōsen Karatsu decoration in the center. Although golden joinery (kintsugi) is more well known, this particular bowl has been repaired with silver. The notion is, that as time passes and the silver tarnishes and darkens, eventually the silver will lose its shine; a visually poetic and playful reminder on the transience of all things. less
