Takatori ware is traditionally characterized by earthy tones decorated with natural glazes. This chawan showcases a unique blue tonal gradation which invokes the feeling of tortoiseshell. The use of multiple natural glazes retains the capacity for originality, culminating in this original glaze style here known as Ao-taimai (Blue-tortoiseshell). Inspired by Tenmoku bowls and the convention of "janome" or "snake's eye" at the bottom of sake cups, the unpredictable blue flushes of glaze, transformed by flame create a beautiful intrigue to enhance one's tea drinking experience.
