Decorate an office or a study with this large antique king armchair. Hand carved by Karpen Furniture in Chicago, the important chair stands on turned legs ending with tapered feet over a barley twist stretcher. The chair features a tall rectangular back with a carved arched pierced frieze at the pediment decorated with leaf motifs and embellished with two side finials over barley twist columns; the center is decorated with a carved leaf oval medallion dressed with inside tan leather. The intricate armrests decorated with acanthus leaves are also upholstered, and the large and wide seat is upholstered with the same patinated leather, and embellished with decorative brass nail heads around the wooden frame. The comfortable armchair is in fair condition with a rich walnut patina and could also be used in a den or game room for extra seating. Plaque on the back for further authentication.
S. Karpen & Bros. was a Chicago-based furniture manufacturing firm that specialized in upholstered furniture. The firm was established in 1880 under the leadership of Solomon Karpen. Samuel's eight brothers also participated in the firm. One brother, Michael Karpen, established a West Coast branch of the firm, "S. Karpen Brothers of California," in Huntington Park, California, in 1932. In 1913, the firm backed Lawrence V. Redman in the establishment of the Redmanol Chemical Products Company. When the Redmanol company was absorbed into the Bakelite Corporation they retained an interest in the new company. The company closed in 1951.
