It plays a crucial role in the ceremony as it is used to replenish the water in the kettle (kama) during the tea-making process. They serve both functional and symbolic purposes in the preparation of matcha and contributing to the aesthetics of the ceremony.

This antique Karatsu water-jar presents a wonderful facture across its surface. On the frontward face, visible traces of the potter's fingertips and light combing decorations can be seen. Kawakujira (皮鯨) refers to the thin band of dark iron glaze around the mouth of the piece, which creates a contrast to the grey/lighter body colour like whale-skin. A charming and readable piece which is rarely found. less
