The pottery is divided into two categories: Joyachi, the mainstream fired at 1200 degrees centigrade with various glazes like Shirokasu, and Arayachi or Nanban-yaki, fired at around 1000 degrees centigrade without glazing, producing larger, dynamic items like sake pots. The distinctive techniques, firing temperatures, and locally sourced clay contribute to the weightiness and warmth of Tsuboya-yaki.

This dachibin flask form was developed for Okinawan farmers working in the rice paddies as it fits on the hip, ideally paired with a leather shoulder strap tied to the lugs and filled with strong awamori sake. See less
