This piece had some incredible provenance behind it, coming from the estate of a Chicago family, who had a second home in Northern Wisconsin, which is where the piece was acquired. Originally it was obtained by a friend of this family who was a former executive of the Inland Glass Company based in Chicago.
The artist known worldwide as Georges Briard was born Jakub Brojdo in 1917 Poland, eventually emigrating to the US in 1937 to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. Later, he served under General Patton during WWII as an interpreter with the US Army. After the war, he and a friend from the Institute moved to New York City, becoming known as the infamous Mid-Century designer Georges Briard.
He successfully launched his unique designs on glass and metal service ware, and very often contracted with Inland Glass in Chicago to source quality glass to make his products. It was through this relationship that Georges Briard gave Inland Glass designs he wasn’t going to release under his own company. This limited partnership and attempt to boost Inland sales was futile, and Inland Glass Company did not survive, but his work with them always will.
The tray measures 16.5" x 16.5" with a 2" patterned rim, which dips elegantly into four recessed bowls measuring 5.75" x 5.75" each, with a 1" separation between them. It is made of a strong glass, with printed design, and the underside is a smooth pebbled texture. It stands about 1" from the base. less
