Henri de-Toulouse-Lautrec was a gifted French artist, but he's perhaps best remembered for the posters he was commissioned to create when the Moulin Rouge opened, in Paris. There were over three hundred posters, and they're still popular decoratively. He enjoyed drinking -- creating a cocktail called Earthquake -- and was a common fixture at the cabarets on Montmartre. His first commission was for the legendary Moulin Rouge, and his posters drew crowds in. Soon other cabarets followed: the Mirliton, the Petit Casino, the Divan Japonais, and Le Ambassadeurs. All this happened at a time when printing in Paris was being revolutionized. Soon hundreds of his posters were circulating about the city. The citizens were charmed by the creative design and use of color.
Lautrec featured the actual performers in his posters. This particular work features a framed lithograph of La Demoiselle de Magasin (The Shop Girl). If you find Paris stimulating, this work is reminiscent of the charm at a time when there were gifted artists and authors making their mark. It is professionally framed. Enjoy! less
