A long history told in dents, scratches, and chipping do not affect it structurally but add to the rustic character. All surfaces have been cleaned but not stripped. The locking mechanism appears to be intact but is missing the key. The chest currently sits on (newer) castors that could be easily removed. The castors add an additional 2.5” to the height (23”). less

This handmade dovetailed strong box features a fitted interior … more Offered for your consideration, this wonderfully rustic antique carpenter’s tool chest. This handmade dovetailed strong box features a fitted interior with three removable inserts, two open and one with hinged lid. There is also a fixed lidded compartment with slots to accommodate saw blades. All these are also beautifully dovetailed and fashioned from cherry wood.

This piece was likely made in New England given the various species of wood used that include in addition to cherry wood, maple, pine and eastern hemlock.

The walls of the exterior retain the original coat of dark green paint which has developed a desirable “crackled ” patina and is re-enforced with cherrywood baseboard and top banding. This chest also boasts two recessed cast iron carrying handles.

This rugged New Englander is well up to performing its original task but makes an equally strong design statement when repurposed as a unique piece of furniture.
