Antique Stained Glass Window
Measures approximately 48" x 52"
The window came from a temple in Youngstown, Ohio that was built in the 1890s. It was then converted in the 1950s to a Zion church. We assume the stained glass windows were installed then.
This window is done in the Dalle de Verre Technique. This technique is done by staring with
one inch thick slabs of glass measuring 8 by 12 inches called Dalles. They are broken with a carbide hammer or sawn with a water cooled diamond blade saw into shapes for designs. The edges of the glass are chipped, or faceted, so that light will be refracted through the facets.
A sand and cement mixture is used to build the window, hence its heavy weight. It is likely around 100 lbs.
Since the glass used in this technique is much thicker than standard glass (usually 1/8” ), the resulting colors are much richer and deeper by comparison. Dalle-de-verre glass is preferably displayed in strong and direct sunlight which allows the facets in the glass to sparkle.
