A rare coffee can, Bute shape early cup and saucer, attributed to Spode, Josiah Spode II period, between 1800 and 1827.
This beautiful set is decorated in the Georgian style with neoclassical pattern. It is similar in design of cups decorated between 1805 and 1810.
The cup and saucer have a band of yellow ground with crisscross floral and red/gold oval medallion surround.
The handle is decorated in classic Spode fashioned gilding. The handle shape is loop with a single lower kink (the kink being slightly more prominent than other manufacturers of the time).
The underside has an indistinguishable red identification mark.
This set is free of chips, cracks or stains. There is some gilt rubbing and light surface scratches on cup rim and saucer. Inside the cup are a few pinhead size imperfections under the glaze.
Also known as Gobelet Litron shape, this was a popular style in the early 1800's. Marketed primarily to the upper classes of society, this set would have been too costly for common use. The factories used some of the finest artisans of the time to decorated these porcelain wares. The gilding is real gold and a dedicated locked safe was used at Spode for storing the gold.
This set came from an estate in Boston's Beacon Hill area and has been used for display purposes only for several generations.
Cup: 2-1/2 h, 2-1/2" dia
Saucer: 5-3/8" dia less
