This is a very rare piece, both in its beauty and its design. Possibly a jail rug, with a style much like Khotan Samarkand rugs and an English sensibility in its design.
Keen eyes will note that the rich burgundy field and gold border underscore floral patterns and pictorials in jewel tones—particularly representations of birds and other mythical creatures resembling phoenixes and dragons.
