Acceptable losses to the paint have … more Cast in Belgium, circa 1960, this cement unicorn features a fabulously weathered white-painted finish. Acceptable losses to the paint have revealed areas of the gray-colored stone, which have developed a black and green patination. The unicorn is depicted in a lodged manner, which is a heraldry term for a domesticated animal lying down with its head raised. A long, flowing mane runs down the nape of the neck, partially covering a bejeweled choker harness. In Europe, unicorns have been part of folklore for over 2,000 years, with people believing they existed up until the late Middle Ages. Legends stated that unicorns were impossible to capture but that their horns contained magical medicinal properties. Eventually, they came to symbolize strength and protection.
