Hand-carved wooden ritual box from the Ifugao Tribe in the Philippines. This incredible hand-crafted box features a raised relief lizard on top and animal head side handles. Likely from the Cordillera Mountains in the island of Luzon, Philippines. A box like this would have been used by the Ifugao priests during ceremonies. The lizard might symbolize wealth and nobility.
The box itself has a great folk art look and it's although it's rustic ... it lack nothing in impact and drama. The wood is dark and worn, possibly narra wood, and has a gorgeous black patina. Pairs well with dark rattan chairs and palm print pillows.
This piece would looking amazing in a den or study or really anywhere you want to add some international charm. As an added bonus, it has a great smell. Old wood and all.
There is one small chip in the ear of one handle, as pictured, but otherwise in good overall shape. The lid has a "handmade" fit but fits well nonetheless.
