Artist: James Vernon Gilliland Sr. was born … more 20th Century oil on canvas titled “The Red Scarf” Dated and signed 1984.
Artist: James Vernon Gilliland Sr. was born on March 23rd, 1920 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He graduated from Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design before moving to Schenectady in 1949 to work as an art teacher at Nott Terrace and Lipton High Schools. Gilliland was a longtime member of the Albany Artists Group and served as President of the association for a time in the 1950s. In 1956, he helped co-found the Oakroom Artists in Schenectady and was among the first artists to exhibit with them. Gilliland would go on to become director and exhibit 37 solo shows during his 20 years with the group. He occasionally taught painting at the Schenectady Museum, where he was Chairman of the Art Committee. He also served as the Associate Supervisor of Art Education at the Albany state Department of Education for 15 years. In his community, Gilliland coordinated outdoor art shows in the Stockade and was a set designer for the Civic Playhouse and the Schenectady Light Opera. Gilliland painted in the modernist style and many of his pieces were figural, dealing with the societal issues and tensions of his time. He died on July 29th, 1990 in Schenectady, New York. less
