Light and stylish, this pair of Mid-Century armchairs showcase the sophistication of Central European Modernist design. Produced in the former Czechoslovakia, the clean angles of this 1960s design combines tapered legs and slender bentwood armrests to create an eye-catching profile. The cushioned seat is set at a deep recline, inviting a relaxed and leisurely posture. The soft suede-like texture and subdued jade hue of the upholstery creates a restful contrast with the bright amber polish of the wood.
Produced by various manufacturers and explored by generations of designers, the bentwood shape is infused with dynamism and movement, reflecting the origins of the technique and the optimism of the industrial revolution-- steam bent furniture was a technological innovation developed by the Thonet Brothers at the end of the 19th century. Later examples of these functionalist lounge chairs were influenced by the postwar fashions established at the international Expo 58 – the so-called ‘Brussels style.’
In the Eastern Bloc, the dynamic forces of Modernism met the stark reality of post-war necessity, producing a simplification of form, boiled down to a haunting beauty. Those bold shapes are graced with nicks and scratches; layers of history revealing the passage of time.
