- This set of four coasters is made entirely of local Vermont materials. The black slate was quarried a few miles … more This set of four coasters is made entirely of local Vermont materials. The black slate was quarried a few miles from here and the apple wood comes from a big old tree on my own property. Apple wood is very fine-grained, dense, heavy and remarkably beautiful. It even resembles sandalwood, but without the fragrance. Unfortunately, however, it is very rare to find it in any size large enough to use in woodwork. Each coaster has a nice "heft" to it and extremely sturdy. The whole set is good for a lifetime of even constant use. If the finish should eventually become a bit dull with use it can be easily restored with wax shoe polish or a some wipe-on furniture finish or oil even over the slate (as long as the surfaces are rubbed very well to a nice gloss afterwards). Assembled, the set is 5 inches square and 3 3/8 inches in height. The individual coasters are 4 3/8 inches square and 5/8 inches in height. They are big enough to accommodate even many pitchers. less
