Pair of Large Qing Dynasty Porcelain Octagonal Archaistic Hu Form Blue & White Vases Qianlong Mark
A pair of large Baluster/archaistic fanghu form Octagonal-shaped vases painted in blue and white, each bulbous vase is decorated with scenes of plants, flowers, fruits, and leaves and is surrounded by borders of floral motifs, wave scroll design, ruyi head motif design, and foliate patterns. The narrow neck has Chi’en Lung motifs on the angled shoulders depicting a pair of flattened twin dragon foo dog handles on a bulbous octagonal faceted body.
Origin: The Octagonal-shaped vases originated from the Qing dynasty (1644-1912) during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, who was also known as Chi'en Lung. They were produced in Jingdezhen, a city in Jiangxi province, which was renowned for its porcelain production.
Shape: Octagonal-shaped vases are characterized by their unique form, with 8 sides. The vases have a bulbous octagonal faceted body with a gently curving narrow neck, a flared continuous 8-sided top rim, and a pronounced concave bottom foot base providing a distinct visual appeal painted in brilliant tones of underglaze blue. Both Vases come with Exquisite Custom Rosewood Octagonal pedestal stands.
Blue-on-White Porcelain with Underglaze Blue: The blue-on-white color scheme is a classic and iconic style of Chinese porcelain. The cobalt blue pigment was applied to the white porcelain surface before firing, resulting in a contrasting and elegant design, well painted in brilliant tones of underglaze blue, the body encircled by two bands, the upper with a continuous wave design scroll below the flower motif design pattern, the lower with ruyi head motif above a composite of floral meander scenes, the neck rim has a ruyi head border motif with floral design, and the bottom base has a continuous wave design scroll border right above the foot base with an underglaze blue Qianlong seal mark, and the base bottom is inscribed with a six-character mark on both vases.
Chi'en Lung Dragon Motif: The narrow neck of the vase often features a decorative motif known as the Chi'en Lung dragon. This motif represents the imperial dragon, a symbol of power, strength, and good fortune in Chinese culture. The dragon is typically depicted with a sinuous body, elongated claws, and a fierce expression.
Symbolism: Octagonal-shaped vases are steeped in symbolism. The Octagonal shape represents symmetry harmony yin (feminine) energy, symbolizing receptivity and tranquility. The twin Dragon handles, on the other hand, are associated with yang (masculine) energy, symbolizing strength and protection. The combination of these elements represents a harmonious balance of energies.
Artistic Skill: The production of Octagonal-shaped vases required exceptional craftsmanship and technical expertise. Skilled artisans meticulously painted the intricate blue designs by hand, displaying their mastery in creating detailed patterns and with flattened handles formed to capture the essence of the dragon motif.
Collector's Items: Octagonal-shaped vases from the Mid to late 19th century are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of Chinese porcelain. Their historical significance, artistic value, and limited availability contribute to their desirability in the art market.
Rarity: Due to their age and the delicate nature of porcelain, the Octagonal-shaped vases from the mid to late 19th century are relatively rare. Surviving examples such as these in such good condition are particularly prized, as many antique pieces may have suffered damage or wear over time.
